What EV Charger Installation Involves
A home EV charger, also called a wallbox or charge point, is a dedicated charging unit installed at a property that charges an electric vehicle 5 to 7 times faster than a standard 3-pin plug. A 7kW single-phase charger, the standard for Irish homes, fully charges a typical EV overnight in 4 to 8 hours.
Installation requires a dedicated circuit run from the consumer unit to the charger location, carried out by a Safe Electric registered electrician and notified to ESB Networks. SEAI administers a home charger grant of €300, reduced from €600 on 1 January 2024.
DIY installation is illegal. EV chargers must be installed by a Safe Electric registered electrician. DIY installation breaches Irish electrical regulations and voids the SEAI grant. There are no exceptions.
Installation Cost
A charger within 10 metres of the consumer unit is a standard install. Every extra 5 metres adds roughly €80 to €120 in labour and materials. A long cable run across a garage, through a wall, or under a driveway can add €300 to €600. An older fuse box with no spare ways needs upgrading before a dedicated charger circuit can be added.

SEAI Home Charger Grant

- Must be the homeowner: tenants do not qualify, though installation with landlord permission is possible without the grant
- Must have off-street private parking (driveway, garage, or private parking space)
- Charger must be listed on the SEAI Smart Charger Register
- Installation must be by a Safe Electric registered electrician
- One grant per MPRN (electricity meter), regardless of how many EVs the household has

Which Charger Is Right for Your Home?
Most Irish homes need a standard single-phase 7kW charger. Here’s how to choose the rest.
Tethered vs Untethered
Tethered (built-in cable) is more convenient for daily use and saves around €50 compared to buying an aftermarket cable. Most installers recommend tethered.
Smart vs Basic
A smart charger costs more but automatically diverts surplus solar to the car and schedules around cheap tariffs. Worth it if you have or plan solar panels.
Single-Phase vs Three-Phase
Single-phase 7kW handles the vast majority of Irish homes perfectly. Three-phase 22kW only makes sense if you already have three-phase supply.

Grant Application and Certification
The electrician submits the SEAI grant application, notifies ESB Networks, and issues a Safe Electric Certificate No. 3.
Risks, Exclusions, and Limitations
Tenants Do Not Qualify for the Grant
Only homeowners can claim the €300 SEAI grant, though a tenant can still install a charger with landlord permission and forgo the grant.
Off-Street Parking Required
The property must have a driveway, garage, or private parking space; on-street parking homes do not qualify.
DIY installation voids the grant. Installation must be carried out by a Safe Electric registered electrician and notified to ESB Networks.
Older Fuse Boards May Need Upgrading First
This adds €800 to €1,400 to the total project cost and should be confirmed at survey stage, not assumed.
One Grant Per MPRN
A household with two EVs does not receive two separate grants for two chargers on the same electricity meter.
Long Cable Runs Increase Cost Significantly
Runs across a garage, through a wall, or under a driveway can add €300 to €600 beyond the standard installation price.
